By last fall, staff scientists had developed guidelines for how to identify a hazardous piece of jewelry based on lab testing that mimicked how much cadmium would enter a child's body from jewelry that was licked or swallowed. In that process, the agency more than tripled its estimate of how much cadmium a child could safely ingest. Jewelry test results above those levels may �C or may not �C trigger the agency to ask businesses to yank an item from their shelves. It wasn't just fuzzy federal guidelines that drove the jewelry industry to seek predictable rules. Importers and manufacturers had to comply with new testing demands from retailers, the varying limits imposed by states such as California and Illinois �C and still another limit that was established when major retailers recently settled a lawsuit with environmentalists. A compromise approach was overwhelmingly endorsed by a panel led by a jewelry industry veteran and including consumer advocates and representatives of testing labs.

Upcycled Jewelry Making Adventures Begin
I began a little jewelry making adventure yesterday afternoon. It started out with the realization that I'll be in Chicago for CHA in less than three weeks. Nothing like a little panic to get the creative ideas going. Orange accessories are always a wonderful thing and some of mine are looking a little tired. I'm hoping to create unique pieces that when somebody asks if I made it I can say yes. So often I say, no I got it at ��. We're always on an orange quest here, so I have lots of supplies hanging out waiting to be transformed into something wonderful. I picked up this slightly damaged set of orange beads at a garage sale last year for a dollar. The little lighter orange beads are from a vendor at a quilt show this winter and were 12 for a dollar. So far I'm in this for $2. Here's what I started with: I added in some beading wire, head pins, earring wires, spacers and a few beads from my stash to create new pieces. So far I have a pair of earrings and an almost finished necklace.

For the 2005 project, she created about 100 crayons, packed in 10 boxes which contain 10 pieces each. Her 2009 "Spirits of Medicine" consist of 30 plaster cast heads, each placed in medical prescription bottles. Despite the bright midday sunshine ("Usually we play in the dark; this is too easy," Kerschen said), the possibly-seizure-inducing light show was in full effect. Turquoise, silver and pink drapes adorned the stage; the band kicked off their last song with Kerschen, tongue-in-cheek, announcing that, "We are so fucking talented." But then a thunderous bass drum stomp and crunchy guitar kicked in, and for a moment, with the crowd totally into it, he could've been right.
